I get that OSU has sucked it up the last 2 years, but I’ve read essentially this same article about 100x on this blog. OSU’s marking changes won’t take effect until 2013. If Riley sucks it up next year, he will get canned and OSU can bring in a new dynamic coach AT THE SAME TIME as our new image. That sounds like a decent strategy. It wouldn’t have been wise to fire Riley after last year.I am a native Oregonian who moved up to Washington two years ago. It’s not that OSU is losing the battle to UO in the state, UO is rapidly becoming a big time program. I see SIGNIFICANTLY more UO gear up here than I do UW or WSU gear. I hate it. I hate the ducks, but that’s just the way it is. Nike has the best sports marketing team in the world and they use UO to market their crap nationally. Plus, UO has been the only consistently successful team in the Northwest in the last decade. OSU needs to win. They do that; the fans will come back in droves.

@OS_Beaver @BuildingTheDam One obvious possible problem is the possibility of not being able to fill all the bowl (and now playoff) games with teams with 7+ wins, requiring taking some 6 win teams. I can see a requirement that a waiver be required for any team without 7 wins, possibly including having to take any 7 win team available first. So I doubt it will be a guarantee that a 6 win team won’t go to a bowl. But there will be no guarantee that you will go, as can now be the case if it takes that to fill all of a conference’s contractual tie-ins.

@BuildingTheDam Short of 7 wins I think the choice is obvious. Delany is pushing the 7 wins thing recently to qualify for bowls. I think the odds are high after this year 6 wins keeps you home as it should. Bowls should be for winners only.

Don’t mis-interpret Lindsey’s statement that no matter how poorly Riley does, she is hearing he should be okay. That doesn’t really mean he should be okay, it means she is hearing he should be okay with the powers that be in the administration, who are still showing confidence in Riley, and probably will survive another poor year. Even if a growing number of others do not share that opinion.

Unfortunately, OSU is irrelevant. It is a boring, slow athletic department that has its headquarters on a sinking ship. Eventually, more will lose interest and stop attending. Add that with needing more donations to be able to move forward, and it pells disaster for OSU. The only thing that will save OSU is winning. OSU is already losing a generation of young fans to Nikegon, look around any public school in the state of Oregon, tell me how many kids wear Nikegon’s gear compared to OSU gear? Its like 90% Nikegon, 10% OSU! That’s pretty said when people in your own state are saying “OS…who?”

I don’t care much about Fresno. San Diego St. is worthwhile especially while the NW schools only play each LA school every other year on average. I got my hands on a 70 page AD report 2 years ago that explained how much more growth would be in the southern United States. For that reason getting into Texas is worth it. You can build two teams up very quickly there and the rest would take care of itself. If the Big 12 expands into Florida that is the only way we match them and the SEC recruiting base wise. You could potentially pair Boise St. and Colorado if BYU was brought in.

I like adding UNLV decently because Vegas is an International destination now and they are building a new stadium. Would be worth it to have a school in Nevada to fill in our map. I think I lean UTSA, Houston, UNLV and San Diego St., BYU or Boise St. I am less confident now the Texoma Four will come our way since the Big 12 deal is strong enough. If we don’t get into Texas, I would take those last 4 I just mentioned. Then UNLV, SDSU might be in the South and BYU, Boise St to the North. I would probably leave the Utah/Colorado pairing as is in that case. CSU just doesn’t bring much at all. Colorado still has some years left to be a stronger factor.

In the theme of pairs in the Pac-12, bring in Boise and Fresno as a pair. Then, Colorado State to pair with Colorado, and BYU to pair with Utah.

But it’ll never happen. The Pac-12 wants Texas, Texas Tech, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

@OS_Beaver I might be a bit biased, but I honestly think we’re an 8-win team, and we expect the same thing: If we can’t beat OSU, we’re not as good as we thought we were either.

Thanks, man! The excitement around Westwood smells. Not a good smell, but it is excitement.

If we don’t win that game I don’t think OSU goes better than 5 wins. That would then mean 3 straight losing seasons. I have respect for UCLA deciding results weren’t good enough even when making the Pac-12 Championshp. That tells me UCLA is ready to get serious about doing what it takes to improve their sports. Your basketball recruiting class is awesome so far. Looks like it will be the #1 class in the nation. When you play in China, represent!
