OSU opened camp today at the Prothro practice fields. According to reports Mannion started a bit slow and then got more in stride. The receivers dropped a few too many on Day 1 but there were some nice over the middle balls. RB Chris Brown looks ‘big’ according to some. That is OK so long as he is fast and hitting holes quick. Stevenson, who has shown some effectiveness at RB has switched to where he will be used more as a DB. I hope he still gets some looks at RB in spells as I thought he was a heady player gaining experience. His instincts should help the team at DB and fill out Perry’s depth.
Below is Mike Riley’s first interview of Fall Camp. He takes credit for the idea of having turf all the way to the stands in Reser. That is definitely a good idea which we will see the fruition of this year. Here’s another idea. Win more games in 2012. OSU needs to go bowling or seats will be piping hot. Also recommended is Marketing 101 where they will tell you it is smarter to call a final event in the spring a ‘Spring Game’ and not a scrimmage. Then once you get more fans to come, reward them with a better produced real game even if players are told to only touch tackle the QB. OSU can’t afford to take its fans for granted and not put on more exciting events. Otherwise, the areas of empty seats we may see for Nicholls St. could creep into regular Pac-12 game attendance.
The fanbase must be grown and this year we may see it is shrinking some because of insufficient promotion and poor recent on field performance. More than anything this year I want to see a fighting spirit that claws itself back from deficits against good teams and aggressively seeks to take and stretch leads at every opportunity. Good to see camp open and let’s hope they are all intent on taking Beaver Nation to a bowl in 2012.
